In New York City, who is required to maintain street signs and sign posts?

 

A: As a New York appeals court noted in Smith v. 125th St. Gateway Ventures, LLC, despite Administrative Code 7-210, which imposes liability on the owners of property abutting a sidewalk to maintain that sidewalk (see, Why Many Defective Sidewalk Cases in New York Are Doomed to Fail), those property owners are not required to maintain the street signs or sign posts, just as they are not required to maintain tree wells.
