In short, the answer is no, they generally do not need to be reduced to writing in order to be enforceable - unless they are of a kind for the purchase of real estate, or if the terms of the agreement cannot be performed within one year. In either of those cases, New York's courts may apply the Statute of Frauds to bar the claim.
