With all of the bad news circulating these days - and there seems to be far more than usual - this story of a Queens car accident that left a 10 year-old girl dead would almost seem to get lost in the shuffle, particularly after we lost nearly 30 of our brave soldiers over the weekend in Afghanistan.

In this case, a family was set to return to Australia when their van collided with a Nissan Sentra at the intersection of 34th Avenue and 31st Street in Astoria. As a result, the van overturned, and this innocent little girl was killed.

But here's the silver lining: immediately after the crash, which occurred shorly before 7 pm yesterday, over a dozen people who were in the area rushed to the van, pushed it back onto its wheels, and pulled the survivors to safety.

I am proud to say that my fellow New Yorkers can be pretty amazing when people are in need.
